Chocolate Heart Pop-Tarts

We are always trying new products in the industry, and discovering new ways to create the flavors that everyone loves and craves.

What’s one of the flavors we know and love? Chocolate Pop-Tarts! A favorite from our childhood, we’ve taken the best parts of this breakfast treat and created an elevated version. Flaky crust, decadent chocolate filling, and pink icing come together to create a sweet breakfast nosh or delicious afternoon snack – perfect for sharing on Valentine’s Day…or any day, for that matter!

Chocolate Heart Pop-Tarts

 

Ingredients

  • Dough:
    • 2 cups all purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • ½ cups shortening
    • 2 1/2 tbsp butter
    • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
    • 2 ½ tbsp water
    • Heart shaped cookie cutter <3  <3
  • Chocolate Filling:
    • ½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips
    • ⅛ tsp Sovereign Flavors Chocolate Flavor
    • ¼ cup heavy cream
    • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • Icing:
    • 1/2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1/2 tablespoon milk
    • Pink food coloring

 

Directions

  • For the Dough:
    1. Start by combing the flour, sugar and salt in a large bowl
    2. Then add the shortening and butter until the mixture resembles large crumbs.
    3. Next add vinegar and water then mix until a dough ball forms.
    4. Cover and chill in the fridge for one hour.
  • For the Filling:
    1. Melt the chocolate chips in a bowl.
    2. Then combine the rest of the filling ingredients, and mix till smooth.
  • To Form the Tarts:
    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Roll the dough to ⅛ inch thick slabs and cut out each heart with a cookie cutter.
    3. Begin to fill half of the hearts with filling.
    4. Top with the other half of the hearts, wipe corners with a bit of water, and press with the tines of a fork to seal.
    5. Poke each top with fork several times.
    6. Brush each pop tart with a beaten egg (optional) for extra shine.
    7. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10-11 minutes.
    8. Let cool completely.
  • For the Frosting:
    1. Combine ingredients in a bowl till evenly colored
    2. Frost the pop-tarts with the frosting.
    3. Add some sprinkles for a pop of color and crunch.
    4. Let the frosting set, and it will harden.
    5. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months, or on the counter for 2-3 days, or fridge for up to one week.
    6. To cook, toast in the toaster on light setting, or bake in oven for 5 minutes at 325 degrees, or simply microwave for 15-30 seconds.
